Do you agree with this man?
Sometimes it’s astounding how seemingly out of touch our leaders are. Yet every one (well, almost everyone) would say that they support free enterprise and want what’s best for the country. Living in a global economy means that fiscal policies by various governments now know no boundaries and will, sooner or later, affect us all.
Put aside your views on Labour, Liberal, Democrats, Republican, etc and see if the following statements make sense.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poar by discouraging the rich. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do far themselves.
The above statement has been attributed to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. They were in actual fact written in 1916 by the Rev. William JH Boetcker, a Presbyterian clergyman and a pamphlet writer.
Does this still hold true today? Leave you to think about it …
